Gwen Frostic

Gwen Frostic
Have you ever heard of Gwen Frostic? I fell in love with her work after reading a feature article in the March 2005 Martha Stewart Living magazine.
Gwen Frostic's work @ MSL magazine
The last time we were in the US I was really excited to find a lovely bird-themed
block print Note Card set at Anthropologie. Aren't they enchanting?
I feel inspired to make a four color block print of my own...

When I was a mere young thing, maybe 14, my girlfriends and I would exchange portfolios of Gwen Frostic cards for special occasions. Later, I had my wedding announcements printed on her cards. I was very happy indeed that Martha brought this talented woman back to life, so to speak!

I grew up in Michigan (where she was from and where her studio is.) My parents said there was some financial stuff going on and that the studio might close. Very sad news! Some kind of dispute between the bank and the studio. Hopefully it all gets worked out... because her work is such a treasure! I have tons and tons of her prints, books and cards! LOVE IT!

I'm also from Michigan and I love that Gwen Frostic's work shows the beauty and majesty of Michigan's natural world. My poor home state is often getting bad press because of the economy but it really is a beautiful spot.

I have a chickadee rubber stamp and a background grass stamp by Gwen Frostic among other little notes and tissue paper. Her raccoons have the best faces.

I remember having a journal of hers in the early 1970's. She is classic. Like someone said, quiet, restful and beautiful. SImple.
thanks for sharing.

Small world. I grew up just a few miles from her home/studio/store and my father knew her. She was an avid bird watcher and loved nature. I have tons of her cards & prints. Being so close, I'm always a bit surprised to see her work all over the place! I loved going to her studio and watching the old printing presses at work and listening to them.

Small world. My mother in law gave me one of her small books of poetry a few years ago when she was cleaning out for a move. I loved the artwork and it's simplicity, but never knew anything about the artist. So cool to see her work is now in Martha. Cheers!

We stayed in a cottage last summer in Michigan and the wall were all adorned with beautiful Gwen Frostic prints. Her work is lovely. I think your birds sometimes remind me of her.

I grew up in Frankfort, Mi, which isn't far from the studio. I was just there this past year and the studio has reopened and has a website. http://www.gwenfrostic.com/
There were some issues with the banks and the person who "inherited" the studio, but it has new ownership and is trying to make a go of it again. Give them your custom.
